DAB radio is used because digital radio has better quality and more channels, offers many ways to experience a program as well as radio like streaming live or accessing content on social media platforms such as youtube, all these options allow users across a range of platforms to choose where and when they listen to radio.

Podcasts are now regularly produced by radio broadcasters, offering the chance to download the programme. Many offer additional content or edited highlights from the original programme.

According to the uses and gratifications theory listeners may use radio for information as news and other trending topics are usually covered on more talk based radio programmes.

The archers is the worlds longest running soap opera broadcast since 1951. Over time the story has changed from being "an everyday story for country folk" to "a contemporary drama in a rural setting. The show was at first used to teach new farming methods to help with food production after WW2. Now the show is still linked to issues with farming but also more global and social issues. The drama is quite slow moving and subtle. set in a fictional village called "Ambleside", storylines can be serious or more rural.

different options of listening allow more flexibility towards a wide target audience, this is shown through the archers radio programme which is able to be accessed digitally for people who miss the live showing off the broadcast.

The archer is aired on BBC radio 4, the BBC's main spoken word channel, no music. The BBC is funded by the license fee.

Although one of the original functions of the show was to educate farmers, it soon gained a larger audiences and a source of entertainment for a wider audience not just people from rural communities. However the show still prides itself on accurate representation of Rural living.

The target audience of people who listen to the archers would be 40-81 years of age, people who live in rural areas

There is a total audience of 6 million people who listen to the archers, 1 million online and the rest from the radio. The target audience is an older British women.

The archers is a British soap opera that is set in the fictional town of Ambleside, it was created in 1951 to teach people how to farm to combat post war food shortages and covers many rural issues, in recent times the show still keeps its rural roots inside of its remit but covers social issues such as domestic abuse and is the longest running, ongoing radio broadcast that is listened to by 6 million people. The archers is a popular show because it appeals to listeners from rural areas by covering well known issues and subjects in its programme.

The programme is recorded at BBC studio in Birmingham. The producers consult specialists advisors when developing storylines. Different scenes are recorded in different areas to paint a picture with sound. There is usually one big storyline going on all the time, and smaller domestic ones running alongside. Family feuds,  violent relationships and affairs co exist with cake baking and village show.

Gavin, Kirstie, Joy, Mick, Alan, Phillip (Gavin's dad), Linda, Emma

Storyline: Gavin has just gotten out of prison and Kirstie is selling her house unwillingly, there is a christmas celebration that is happening done by Mick, Alan and Linda, Gavin is sick and has been in the hospital since he has been out of prison and is working at a construction site ( modern day slavery). Joy and Mick arguing about Emma in parish council after she broke the rules). Alan, Linda, Joy and Mick are going to go on a village trip. Linda is upset when she sees Gavin.

This episode informs people on the negative impacts of modern day slavery, and entertains people with the christmas pantomime storyline.

The episode shows the social and cultural impacts of crime families, prison and modern day slavery. The episode has a lot of accents to shows some cultural diversity.

The audience is appealed to the story because of the dramatic storyline that is followed over the course of new episodes

In recent times for the shows the issues of domestic abuse, modern day slavery, inheritance tax and gay marriage.


for many of the listeners the archers is like a familiar friend, the show used to be very lighthearted. In recent years listeners have complained that the show has become more melodramatic. The most notable example is the abusive relationship between Helen and Rob which ended in murder, however this new storyline has attracted many more new viewers. Some of the online audience is global so not all British people, listening to the archers is a crucial way for British people living abroad is good to connect with the culture of rural British living.

Personal identity the listener could relate to the characters and feel a sense of closeness with them. Information the listener may be a British person living abroad that wants to still know about how rural living is like in Britain by listening to the Archers. Entertainment the melodramatic storyline will have constant entertainment to a listener of the show. Social interaction can be found through discussions had by people online and in real life to do with the show these interactions would be plentiful because 6 million people listen too the archers.
